Community Interest

The group are passionate about conserving the red squirrel populations.

There is a very real risk of red squirrels becoming extinct in Mid Nithsdale and surrounding area due to the incursion of non-native grey squirrels.

Grey squirrels out-compete native red squirrels for food and habitat and carry highly contagious disease known as the Squirrel Pox Virus (SQPV) which is deadly to red squirrels. Once SQPV has been contracted by a red squirrel it will succumb to the disease within two weeks.

Our group covers the Mid-Nithsdale area of Dumfries & Galloway including the villages of Thornhill, Penpont, Closeburn, Moniaive, Tynron, Durisdeer, Ae, Enterkinfoot and Keir Mill

Support the GROUP

Since 2023 the Mid Nithsdale Red Squirrel Group formed a Community Interest Company (CIC) with the help of the Scottish Wildlife Trust / Saving Scotlands Red Squirrels team. The aim of the CIC is to enable the group to work independently and establish a stronger community of volunteers.

There are many types of roles required towards ensuring we do not lose the red squirrel population entirely.
